The Highlands-Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual Christmas luncheon, bringing together community members for a festive celebration filled with music, gratitude, and a heartfelt leadership transition in the Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District (GCC ISD).

The event featured special musical performances by the Highlands Elementary choir, directed by Marsha Goodwin, and the Goose Creek Memorial High School varsity choir, led by Josh John-Louis. Their renditions of Christmas carols set a joyful tone for the gathering.

A highlight of the luncheon was the recognition of retiring Superintendent Dr. Randal O’Brien. Reflecting on his decade of service, O’Brien expressed deep appreciation for the community.

“It’s been my honor to serve as your superintendent of schools. As I close out this chapter and move on to retirement, I just wanted to tip my hat to you because receiving the Terry Davis Lifetime Achievement Award was about five or six years ago. It was an amazing experience for me to be recognized by such an esteemed group. You made me feel loved that year,” O’Brien said to chamber members.
“And every day that I come in this room, I feel loved by you. Thank you for your support. Our job is to educate the children of this community and prepare them for adulthood. We work our very hardest to do that for you as superintendent and as educators across our community.”

O’Brien also introduced his successor, Dr. Joe Rodriguez, noting the Board of Trustees’ commitment to finding a leader who is approachable, friendly, and knowledgeable. Rodriguez, with 27 years in education, shared his excitement about joining the community.

“Every once in a while, superintendents are approached about positions that really match what you’ve always said you’re about,” he began with his remarks.
“Goose Creek CISD had a posting, and after much thought and family discussion, we felt this was the right fit for us. I look forward to communicating with you all the vision that the board has established. The community voice that has been allowed here has moved the school district forward, and I come here to serve everyone and to work.”

The luncheon also included announcements about the upcoming Chamber gala, calls for sponsorships and nominations for the Terry Davis Award and Business Organization of the Year, and reminders about community events and board elections. Attendees enjoyed a meal prepared by Hungry Jack of Restaurant Crosby, with many expressing gratitude for the sense of togetherness and shared purpose that defines the Highlands-Lynchburg community.

As the meeting closed, the Chamber reflected on the importance of service, leadership, and community spirit—values embodied by both outgoing and incoming superintendents.
